The MENA Twittersphere was aflame on Wednesday as news rolled out about fresh Israeli strikes in the Gaza Strip the same morning.

The Israeli air force carried out a total of four airstrikes on areas across Gaza, which witnesses told Al Jazeera targeted training grounds of the Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad.

The Israel army says the strikes were done in retaliation for a rocket that landed in southern Israel after being fired by Hamas's military wing, the Qassam Brigades, on Tuesday. But Qassam claims their rocket was never meant to land in Israel and was instead just a stray from a number of experimental rockets they were firing into the sea.

Tuesday's rocket from Hamas and Wednesday's airstrikes from Israel mark the third of these interactions since a ceasefire ended a 50 day war in the Gaza Strip during the summer of 2014.

Scenes of the war are not a distant memory — last summer ended with the death of some 2,200 Palestinians and 73 Israelis.

Now, Twitter is in a frenzy over the new violence. Some of the first reports of the strikes came from social media site, and Wednesday saw Arabic and English responses from across the spectrum.
