It's usually overshadowed by other top news headlines, but there's no denying that the civil war in Yemen, which began one year ago, has wreaked incredible chaos and humanitarian suffering on the already-poor country.

Since March 26, 2015, a Saudi-led coaltion of mostly Sunni Arab states has conducted airstrikes in Yemen against the Houthi movement, a Shi'a rebel group that took over the Yemeni capital Sanaa from the Saudi-backed government in September, 2014.  Since the start of the airstrike campaign, the UN has estimated over 8,000 civilian casualties.

A series of attempted peace talks have failed, though UN special envoy Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed told Reuters Wednesday that the warring sides had agreed to halt combat on April 10, one week before planned talks in Kuwait.

Here's a roundup of photos from around Yemen this past week:

Sanaa's UNESCO-listed historic buildings are shown damaged following airstrikes on March 23, 2016 that were reportedly carried out by the Saudi-led coalition.  The capital city's unique historic district has been under great risk of destruction since the start of the war, and repeated pleas by UNESCO officials seemingly haven't been enough to halt the damage.  (AFP/Mohammed Huwais)
