A Muslim woman in New York took her oath as a civil court judge last week, swearing on the Quran. Most of those taking oaths in the US place their hand on the Bible, and therefore it is not surprising that there was considerable backlash from the nation’s Islamophobes.

Judge Carolyn Walker-Diallo also wore a hijab while being sworn in at the Brooklyn Borough Hall in New York City. On her website, she expressed her feelings about her induction.

“All is praise is indeed due to the Most High! I am humbled that my community has entrusted me with the immense responsibility of ensuring that EVERYONE has notice and a FAIR opportunity to be heard in the halls of justice.”

The biography on her website details her extensive experience in the field, describing her commitment to equality.

“Carolyn Walker-Diallo is a life-long resident of East New York with extensive legal experience in the public and private sectors. While remaining firmly committed to ensuring equality under the law, Carolyn is dedicated to bringing integrity, compassion, a unique perspective, and a wealth of knowledge to the bench.”

While she did receive an outpouring of support, others took issue with her appointment. Cue the hateful Islamophobic backlash.
