Islamophobes in Germany have grown increasingly loud in recent years: Demonstrations against so-called "Islamization" in German cities have swelled at times to include more than 15,000 people.

The latest incarnation of this phenomenon is a call from a right-wing German group to ban mosques. A local wing of the Alternative For Germany, a nationalistic German political party, recently released a policy proposal to forbid the "construction and operation" of mosques, according to a report by the Deutsche Welle news agency.

The proposal reportedly said that mosques "do not just serve common prayer, but also the spreading of Islamic teaching, which advocates the removal of our legal order."

The Deutsche Welle article noted that the leadership of the Alternative For Germany party distanced itself from the radical proposal. Still, it's remarkable that any group affiliated with a major political party in Europe would feel emboldened to suggest such an extreme plan.
