Saudi’s King Salman bin Abdulaziz made news this week for his extravagant travel style. He was reported to have taken over 500 tons of luggage with him (as well as 2 elevators and an entourage of 1,500 people...) to Jakarta, Indonesia an an official political visit.

It’s hard to imagine how much 500 tons really is, but it roughly equates to:

  • 2 1/2 half blue whales

  • or 70 elephants

In this huge amount of cargo were also two Mercedes Benz 600’s.

You might still be wondering why the King needs two elevators on standby, but this isn’t the first time he takes them with him on a political visit. In 2015 the king visited France and caused a huge uproar by pouring cement on the beach to install an elevator next to his villa, which the French authorities agreed to on the condition that they were removed after he leaves.

King Salman's visit to Jakarta is part of a 9-day tour of Asia aiming to boost economic ties with the continent.
