A Muslim lawmaker from the US tweeted a shocking image of apartheid in the Palestinian city of Hebron on Thursday.

“I saw this as I walked down street in Hebron. While window opens to street, no Palestinian can walk/drive on it,” said Rep. Keith Ellison of Minnesota.

The photo shows a sign behind a cage reading: “Caution, this was taken by Israel. You are entering apartheid."

Hebron is majority Muslim but the city center has been occupied by Israeli settlers for years. There are streets in Hebron, like the one Ellison photographed, where Palestinians are not allowed to walk or drive (even if their homes are on the street, as Ellison pointed out).

Hebron is one of the epicenters of the century-old Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Both Muslims and Jews worship at the city’s Tomb of the Patriarchs, known to Muslims as the Ibrahimi Mosque, which is said to contain the remains of the patriarchs Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Sarah, Rebecca and Leah.

Ellison’s tweet went viral, and immediately provoked gratitude from Twitter users.

“I hope more Americans learn about the oppressive regime we live under,” wrote one Palestinian user.

A Jewish activist in Tel Aviv wrote: “thank you 4 speaking up! #BDS is an elementary step for ending ethnic supremacy & #apartheid. from a privileged-Israeli-Jew.”
