Social media in Saudi Arabia was all aflutter Tuesday over the video of a man using a motorized scooter to circle around his pilgrimage in Mecca.

In a horribly-shot vertical video, you see a robed man soaring past the rest of his fellow pilgrims with little circles of light at his feet. This sparked outrage online and even prompted a fatwa specifically banning the use of scooters during Hajj.

Here's the video:

The clip triggered a barrage of Twitter responses. We also heard from the scooter-rider himelf — revealed as Baraa Hamed, a Saudi Arabian doctor in the capital Riyadh. On his Facebook, the physician said he used the scooter because he was incredibly tired after performing a 15-hour surgery. After all, he said, isn't religion supposed to make someone's like easier?

Then he filmed himself riding the scooter around the hospital.

We're not sure how his own response will work on his fatwa-donning opposers, but for now we're just filing this story away in the "things that blew up on Twitter in Saudi" folder. Have a look at some of the social media defenders and complainers below.

This is just like a wheelchair, but my objection is that he might just fall down.

He is a doctor who just finished a 15 hours surgery successfully; he was tired and wanted to thank Allah for the surgery.

Very soon we will see people circumnavigate around the Kaaba using this machine, you takeoff from you house roof and start the journey.

This time they used a scooter, the next time they will use a bicycle.
