The Twittersphere has exploded after Libertarian Party presidential candidate Gary Johnson put his foot in it, asking “what is Aleppo?” when queried about the embattled Syrian city in a studio interview this morning.

#WhatIsAleppo has begun trending on Twitter after MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” panelist Mike barnacle asked Johnson: “What would you do if you were elected about Aleppo?”

Johnson’s response… “And what is Aleppo?”

Aleppo, Syria’s largest pre-war city, has been among the worst hit areas during the country’s war. Earlier this week, it was reported that chlorine gas was dropped in one of the rebel-controlled neighborhoods, injuring 70 in an attack opposition figures blamed on the regime of president Bashar al-Assad.

The stunned interviewer asked if Johnson was kidding, before clarifying that Aleppo “is a city in Syria,” once it became clear that Johnson was indeed in the dark.

It wasn’t long before Twitter lit up, mocking Johnson and predicting the end to his political career.

One journalist mockingly suggested Johnson may only known Aleppo by its Arabic name, “حلب”, pronounced as Halab.

A follow up interview with Johnson proves that he genuinely has no idea what Aleppo is. “I am incredibly frustrated with myself," he said. "I have to get smarter and that’s just part of the process," Johnson conceded.

In the latest polling data, Johnson is at 9% against Clinton at 42.2% and Trump at 39.1%.
