UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon called on world leaders Saturday to cooperate and address problems in Sudan and other vulnerable countries around the world. Speaking at the opening session of a two-day World Policy Conference in Marrakech, Morocco he reiterated a message delivered last month to a UN general assembly in New York.
Speaking about a January referendum in southern Sudan that observers project will partition Africa's biggest state, the UN leader said: "The stakes are very high. "Everyone is very much concerned about the future of Sudan, the future of Africa."
According to AFP, Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir stated a few days ago he would "not accept" an alternative to unity. Ban said the UN would deploy monitors "in every county of southern Sudan starting from this week until the end of the referendum" to track developments there.
