Egypt and Sudan agreed to build a new plant for sugar on the White Nile. The new factory will have a production capacity of 450,000 tons of sugar. Its investment costs are estimated at about 400 million euros and it will serve the sugar needs of the Egyptian and Sudanese people.
Dr. Mahmoud Khattab, head of the Egyptian Nubaria Sugar company said that it contributes 10% of the capital of the new factory, adding that domestic consumption of sugar in Egypt amounts to 2.8 million tons while the domestic production is estimated at 1.7 million tons.
Regarding the crisis in the Egyptian sugar market and the growing prices, Khattab said the main reason for this is due to the weakness of government control and the monopolistic practices by sugar merchants. In addition he mentioned the inability to achieve self-sufficiency in sugar and the high world prices in recent months. According to him, the price of 1 ton of white sugar increased to US$750.
