Two Palestinians were killed on the Gaza Strip border on Thursday morning, when Israeli troops opened fire on a number of suspects on the northern end of the Strip, Israeli sources said. The Palestinians were trying to infiltrate an Israeli settlement near the border, the Israeli media reported.
Israeli planes and troops on the ground opened fire and confirmed hits. Sources in Gaza quoted by Palestinian news agency Ma'an said that a total of 15 artillery shells were launched into the Strip.
Meanwhile, senior Hamas leader Ismail Haniya said on Wednesday the his group would accept a peace deal with Israel if the Palestinian people approved it in a referendum. Hamas "will respect the results of a referendum even if the results conflict with Hamas's positions," Haniya said, according to AFP.
"We accept a Palestinian state with full sovereignty on the land occupied in 1967 with Jerusalem as its capital and a solution to the issue of refugees," he added.
