The United States said Sunday that Saturday's vote in was an "important step" towards achieving the goals of the protesters. According to AFP, American ambassador Margaret Scobey praised the huge turnout for the referendum on constitutional changes aimed at overseeing fresh elections within six months and a swift return to civilian rule. "Egyptians yesterday took an important step towards realising the aspirations of the January 25 revolution," Scobey said in a statement.
According to preliminary results, the majority of the Egyptians backed the proposed amendments. In Greater Cairo, initial results indicated that 65% of the voters approved the amendments .
In Alexandria, 70% of voters backed the amendments and the same percentage was reported from the province of Damietta.
In the Suez province, results showed an overwhelming approval of the amendments.
