Lebanese security sources said Sunday the killing of Abdul Rahman Awadh, one of the key leaders of Fatah al-Islam, on Saturday was a "positive step in eliminating" what was left of the terrorist group. However,they added he buried with him secrets about several deadly attacks.
An Nahar daily on Sunday quoted sources as saying that Awadh's killing by military intelligence agents in the town of Chtaura was a "positive step in eliminating what was left of Fatah al-Islam given that Awadh was the last leader of the organization after he succeeded Shaker al-Abssi." Al-Abssi was reportedly killed in Syria after he escaped Lebanon some three years ago.
The newspaper said that after the arrest of the Abdul Ghani Jawhar ring, which carried out the Tripoli and Bahsas bombings, the intelligence bureau was able to identify Awadh as the new leader of Fatah al-Islam.
The army intelligence killed Awadh along with his associate Ghazi Faisal Abdullah, who goes by the nom de guerre of Abu Bakr Mubarak. They were trying to escape to Syria with false identification cards.
