The Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has suggested to the African countries to unite their military forces and create an "army of one million troops" to protect the continent and repel foreign powers such as NATO and China. The Saudi newspaper Riyadh quoted Gaddafi as saying in a speech in Senegal's capital: "The national armies alone can not save the country and there must be an African army which is composed of one million soldiers."
He added: "This joint force will protect the borders, water and protect the independence of Africa. It will counter NATO, China, France, Britain and other countries."
Gaddafi also criticized the opponents of his proposal to establish a unity government for Africa. The Libyan leader thinks this kind of governing body is the only way for Africa to achieve development without Western intervention.
