Following the failure of the Syrian - Saudi initiative, it is assumed that the ministers from the Hizbullah-led March 8 bloc will resign from the Lebanese government Wednesday afternoon and return to the opposition benches. The Al Akhbar newspaper reported that this decision came after a meeting held yesterday evening when Christian leader General Michel Aoun was the first to officially declare the failure of the Arab initiative. The opposition demands to hold a government session to take a decision on the international tribunal.
The meeting was attended in addition to General Aoun by MP Suleiman Franjieh, Assistant Secretary-General of Hizbullah, Hussein Khalil, Deputy Speaker MP Ali Hassan Khalil, Minister: Mohammed Fneish, Hussein Hajj Hassan, Fadi Abboud, Minister Ali Shami, Mohammad Jawad Khalifeh, Ibrahim Dadayan, Minister Gebran Bassil and Charbel Nahas.
The bloc is demanding to hold a cabinet meeting or the ministers will quit. Minister Fneish said that the opposition is waiting for the answer by Prime Minister Hariri, pointing out that this is the responsibility of the Lebanese President to request holding a ministerial session, blaming the U.S. administration for thwarting the Arab endeavors to find a solution.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Saad Hariri is in the USA and expected to meet with President Obama. A request from him to return home was not met. The presidential palace announced Tuesday night that the President Suleiman contacted Hariri, without giving further details.
