Syrian activists said on Tuesday that operations carried out by the Syrian security forces against demonstrators opposing President Bashar al-Assad in the governorate of Homs (center) and the coastal city of Latakia (West) left at least 16 people dead. The previous toll reported by human rights organizations spoke about the death of six persons, four of them in Latakia and two in Homs.

The activists said that the death toll from operations carried out by the security forces Monday in the city of Homs and the nearby town of Hula left 12 dead.

On its part, the United Nations expressed concern again about the plight of some 5000 Palestinian refugees who fled their camp in Latakia, after the area has come under attacks by Assad's forces. Christopher Gunness, the spokesman for the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) said the situation "was very worrying," urging the Syrian government to allow access to the area.

Meanwhile, some military forces began their withdrawal from the Syrian city of Deir ez-Zor in the east near the border with Iraq. Residents of the city said they "farewell the army after the return of security to the city."
