Yemen: Two soldiers die in al Qaeda attack

News reports said Friday that two Yemeni soldiers were killed and five others were wounded in an attack by gunmen believed to be loyal to al Qaeda. The attack took place in a checkpoint near the town of Zanzibar, the capital of Abyan province, south of Yemen.

On Thursday a number of staff members of the U.S. embassy in the Yemeni capital Sana'a came under attack while traveling by car in the area of the embassy. The attackers used a hand grenade. Philip Crowley, a spokesman for the U.S. State Department in Washington said the attack caused no casualties. Crowley added: We are investigating the incident," stressing that "The bomb exploded outside the car."

A Yemeni security officials said security forces have arrested several suspects, including a 20 year old Jordanian suspect. Following the attack, the American embassy urged Americans living in Yemen to "exercise caution" and avoid areas that have experienced similar attacks in the past.
