Palestinians stop being a 'threat' - during Ramadan

in honor of Ramadan, Palestinians from Gaza and the West Bank will no longer be deemed “security risk” or “terrorists.” The commander of the Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) announced in an Arabic-language Facebook video (with poor Arabic) that Palestinians will be able to travel to Jerusalem to pray freely, visit their relatives beyond the separation barrier and even see the Mediterranean Sea.

You will fast ... or else

Ramadan, which begins this week, is the Muslim holy month when adult believers fast from sunrise to sunset. Fasting is supposed to encourage self-control but fasting under the threat of arrest is more about obedience than self-control. Using the law to ensure that people fast (as numerous Arab countries do) undermines the moral purpose of Ramadan, just for the sake of keeping up appearances.

In Iran, Mahdieh Golrou is free.  Speech is not.

In January 2015, Iranian authorities released women’s rights defender Mahdieh Golrou from Tehran’s Evin Prison, after three months in detention for participating in peaceful demonstrations. Six months after Mahdieh’s release on bail, Iranian activists continue todemonstrate against the same violations she protested: restrictions on freedom of expression and academia, and the impunity afforded to perpetrators of violence against women.
