In Sisi's Egypt, sexual violence is a political tool   

Since the July 2013 military coup in Egypt, sexual violence and assault has increased, worsened, and changed in fundamental ways. While these practices have never been uncommon in Egypt’s detention centers, a recent report by the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) indicates that sexual violence is increasingly being committed by police, army, security, and intelligence officials in the country. These assaults are happening in public spaces and private, residential areas, in addition to state-controlled facilities.

An impish desire for imperial deja vu   

A recent online commentary by Robert Kaplan for Foreign Policy displays the provocative title: “It’s time to bring imperialism back to the Middle East”. The punch line surfaces in the final paragraph: “Imperialism bestowed order, however retrograde it may have been”. Retrograde? How about brutal?

What's behind the Taliban's trip to Tehran?  

On May 19, the Tasnim News Agency, which has ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), was the first to break the story: “A political delegation of Taliban led by Tayyeb Agha has traveled to Tehran and held talks with certain Iranian security and military officials. They had also previously visited Iran during the Islamic Awakening Conference.
