The Islamic Resistance movement Hamas said Monday that the five Palestinians who were killed in an ambush by Israeli commandos Sunday night in the West Bank city of Qalqilya were members of its group, according to a statement faxed to Albawaba.com.

The Islamic group said that the slain “were on their way to throw stones at Israeli soldiers,” adding that dozens of soldiers and four helicopters took on the assassination, which claimed the lives of five, while three others managed to escape.

The statement also said that “ambulances were not allowed into the scene to carry the injured. ”

Israel had claimed earlier that the ambush targeted Fateh leaders.

The Palestinians were killed as they traveled near the town of Habla in the northwest of the West Bank, reported Al-Jazira satellite channel.

They were identified by the statement as Qosai Zahran, 23, Mahmoud Yousef, 30, Mahdi Qasem, 17, Zeyad Ghaleb, 18 and Mohammed Odwan at the age of 18.

The killing came amid increased efforts to restore peace talks and to ease tension in order to bring an end to the two-month-old Intifada, which has so far claimed the lives of close to 290 Palestinians and injured thousands – Albawaba.com
