Twelve people were killed and 56 were missing early Sunday after a ship smuggling more than 100 African citizens to Europe sank off the Libyan coast, according to official sources in Tripoli.
The stricken fishing trawler, the nationality of which was not known, went down off Tripoli late Saturday "in bad weather" a justice ministry source said.
"There were 120 people on board, illegal African immigrants en route to Europe and perhaps specifically towards Italy," the source added, according to AFP.
"The Libyan coastguard managed to save 52 people, 12 are dead and 56 missing," he further said.
Investigations were underway to determine the nationality of the migrants and their human smugglers as well as their departure point. (Albawaba.com)
