12TH IAAF Athletics World Championships
Mariam Yusuf Jamal of Bahrain celebrates her victory

Bahrani runner Mariam Yusuf Jamal retained her world title in the Women’s 1,500m on Sunday. The win was prompted when Spain’s Natalia Rodriguez was disqualified for clashing with Ethopia’s Gelete Burka on the final lap. The decision brought Jamal on top with a winning time of 4min 03.74sec.
Mariam, who has been sponsored by Nike for the past 2 years, is the first Bahraini woman to win a world championship title with gold at the 11th IAAF World Championships in Osaka, Japan last year. In 2006, Mariam also won two gold medals in the 15th Asian Games in Doha, Qatar in December. She has represented and continues to represent Bahrain with distinction in top class international competitions. In 2008, she finished fifth over the 1500m at the 29th Beijing Olympics in China and in 2005, finished 5th in the world championships 1500m final. Her other career achievements include a victory at the IAAF World Cup in Athens, Greece running for Asia in 2006 and a world indoor championships bronze over the same event in 2006.
