15 people were injured outside the Gharbiya governorate headquarters Tuesday afternoon during violent clashes between members of the Muslim Brotherhood and those who oppose the appointment of new governor Ahmed al-Baily.
The opposition staged a protest outside the governorate's headquarters against the appointment of Baily, former head of the Muslim Brotherhood's executive bureau in Damietta. They were surprised when they were attacked by hundreds of Muslim Brotherhood members holding sticks. Both sides pelted rocks at each other, after which the Gharbiya Security Directorate deployed the Central Security Forces to secure the building and control the rioting.
Supporters chanted for President Mohamed Morsi and reopened the gates of the headquarters, which the protesters had closed with chains.
On Sunday, Morsi appointed 17 new governors, including 7 from the Muslim Brotherhood. The opposition has vehemently objected their selection, accusing Morsi of attempting to tighten his grip on power before opposition protests on 30 June.
Demonstrations against the reshuffle were held in a number of other governorates.
