A Syrian teenage refugee girl has been kidnapped in Lebanon's northeastern city of Baalbek, a security source told The Daily Star Monday.

But her father has been reluctant to alert the police to her abduction for unclear reasons, the source said.

The source said the incident occurred Sunday evening when the kidnappers, riding in a Volkswagen Golf without plates, snatched the 16-year-old girl, identified as Aya, from the center of Baalbek.

It was a rare incident for the city, although kidnappings are common in villages on Baalbek's outskirts.

There was no information about the motives of the kidnapping, the source said, noting that no ransom was requested.

The father has refrained from alerting police in Baalbek. The source indicated that he may be fearing that such a move might cause the abductors to harm his daughter.
