ALBAWABA- In a tragic turn of events, heavy rainfall in Oman led to flash flooding on Monday, claiming the lives of at least 17 individuals, including schoolchildren who were traveling on a bus.

The sudden downpour overwhelmed parts of the country, particularly in Oman’s North Al Sharqiyah province, prompting rescuers to scramble in search of survivors.

The devastation was compounded by the loss of a group of school children and their driver as their vehicle was overtaken by the floodwaters.

Authorities, including the Royal Oman Police and the Omani military, swiftly mobilized to aid citizens in flooded areas, according to reports from the state-run Oman News Agency.

The impact of the heavy rains was not limited to Oman alone, as neighboring regions, including Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, braced for the possibility of similar weather conditions.

Flash flooding, a common occurrence during heavy rainfall in Oman, poses significant risks to residents, particularly those who venture near dry riverbeds, or "wadis," which can rapidly fill and become hazardous during flooding.
