ALBAWABA- At least 18 Egyptian workers were killed and three others injured on Thursday morning when a heavy transport truck collided with a pickup truck carrying laborers on the Port Said–Ismailia road, security and medical sources said.

The crash occurred on the 30 June Axis south of Port Said. The victims, who were from Dakahlia province, were traveling to jobs at fish farms in Port Said when the truck struck their vehicle.

Witnesses said the collision was severe, turning what had been a routine work journey during the holy month of Ramadan into a scene of devastation.

Ambulances rushed to the site and transferred the injured to nearby hospitals, where they were reported to be in stable condition.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, with preliminary findings suggesting excessive speed and traffic violations may have contributed to the crash.

The accident underscores ongoing concerns about road safety in Egypt, where traffic collisions continue to claim thousands of lives each year. Official figures indicate that more than 7,000 people died in road accidents in 2025, amid persistent challenges including speeding, overloading, and weak enforcement of traffic regulations.

The tragedy follows several recent fatal crashes across the country, including a February 9 collision in northwestern Egypt that killed seven people and another earlier this month on Minya’s Eastern Desert Road that left 11 dead.

In June last year, 19 teenage laborers were killed in a truck–minibus collision in the Nile Delta, while two separate accidents in 2025 claimed 25 lives in Asyut and near Hurghada.
