ALBAWABA- At least 23 people, including children and two pregnant women, were killed and 12 others injured on Saturday when a massive fire and explosion tore through a crowded Waldo’s discount store in downtown Hermosillo, turning pre–Day of the Dead shopping into a national tragedy.

The blaze erupted afternoon. local time, engulfing the two-story building within minutes as families scrambled to escape. Videos shared online showed thick plumes of black smoke rising over the city center as rescue teams rushed in.

Firefighters, paramedics, and police worked through the evening, evacuating nearby shops and pulling victims from the smoldering debris.

Sonora Governor Alfonso Durazo confirmed the death toll late Saturday, calling the incident “an unspeakable tragedy” and pledging a “full and transparent investigation.” Authorities said most victims died from toxic smoke inhalation, not burns, and ruled out foul play or terrorism.
