Twenty-six people from Syria and Jordan were killed when a mini-bus collided with a truck and both vehicles burst into flames on a Saudi road near the Kuwaiti border, a newspaper reported on Saturday.

Al-Riyadh said the head-on collision occurred in Hafer al-Batin. Twenty-five out of the 27 people on the bus were killed as well as the truck driver, while the two others escaped but with serious burns.

The bus was full of Arab passengers returning to their home countries via Saudi Arabia, it said.

Saudi Arabia has one of the world's highest rates of road accidents, mostly due to speeding, according to the transport ministry. More than 78,000 people have died in Saudi road crashes since 1970, official figures show -- RIYADH (AFP)
