The 2nd Amman Stand-up Comedy Festival kicks start

The 2nd annual of Amman Stand-up Comedy Festival (ASCF) started yesterday on December 4 , under the patronage of Mayor of Amman, Omar Al Maani, and with attendance of a huge audience of comedy shows lovers. This weeklong event runs until December 10.
In a declaration to the interested media, Al Maani said: "3 thousand spectators attended the first edition which was held from 2-6 December 2008, and attracted a large number of audiences on local, regional, and international levels; such a novel performa motivated the organizers of this event to increase the days of the comic shows this year".

He expected that the 3rd festival next year will be held on a larger scale to give the chance for a bigger number of viewers to attend the stand-up comedy shows in which many local and international famous comedians annually participate.

He mentioned that Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) received many calls from Arab cities to make use of GAM's experience in running such festivals, pointing out that the festival of this year lured many non- Jordanian attendees and participants.

He added: "The Festival gives the Jordanian Capital an important dimension in making it a regional and international platform for stand-up comedy performances, in addition to enrich the City's cultural movement. It also helps in reinforcing Amman's position as an important tourist and cultural destination for Arab and regional visitors".

The first comedy show, held in Al Hussein Cultural Center, was performed by the international comedians, namely, Maz Jobrani, Russ Meneve, Ali Hassan, Sherry Davey, Nemr Abou Nassar, and Dean Obeidallah.

In this context, auditions were conducted on Friday to discover some talented comedians; 5 competitors out of 16 were selected to participate in the festival and show their talents, they are: Yousef Shweihat, Lara Sawalha, Tod Marks, Fares Haddadin, and Mohammad Lahham.

Some local celebrities commended the idea of conducting such festivals which give them the chance to prove their talents as comedians, and eventually this shall promote the local artistic potential.

GAM organizes this comedy festival in close cooperation with the critically acclaimed New York Arab-American Comedy Festival, and Orbit Showtime.

A workshop was held on Saturday (5/12/09) about the ways of teaching basics of stand-up comedy to people with no experience in this domain. Another workshop was dedicated to qualify interested people with information to enable them enter television content industry.
