3M products and technologies work behind the scenes in Beijing
When thousands of athletes and the eyes of the world focus on the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China, they may not see 3M. But, the company’s products and technologies will be hard at work behind the scenes, enhancing the experience for participants and spectators alike. The diversity of 3M’s offerings ranges from cables for computer systems to traffic signs and air filters.
In the Bird’s Nest
National Stadium, known as the Bird’s Nest, will be equipped with innovative technology and products that include:
• Filtrete™ Commercial HVAC Filters installed in the building’s suites to improve indoor air quality. Filtrete filters are a component of a state-of-the-art air filtration system, designed to reduce the concentration and impact of harmful particles in the air and improve indoor air quality.
• 3M Volition™ Structured Cabling System used throughout the Bird’s Nest to ensure a secure computer network. Volition cabling enhances the efficiency of communications and Internet broadcasts of sporting events.
• 3M™ Digital Wall Displays with Vikuiti™ Super Close Projection technology placed in venue conference rooms. This new system lets referees and coaches discuss tactics, analyze games and coordinate plans via interactive digital displays.
• 3M™ Nomad™ Matting slip resistant floor mats placed in high-traffic areas to capture dirt and moisture.
Signs of the times
3M’s Commercial Graphics products are creating eye-popping signage in the Beijing Capital International Airport. This signage helps visitors easily move through the airport and locate baggage. 3M’s Commercial Graphics vehicle wraps were also widely used on Olympic vehicles during the torch relay.
Safety first
• 3M Traffic Safety Solutions provides products for the Beijing Olympic road reconstruction project. The company’s products are found in road signs and pavement markings that provide direction, more efficiently guide traffic, reflect light during nighttime driving and help improve traffic safety. 3M signs also can be found inside most of the sports facilities.
• Scotchlite™ Reflective Material is enhancing the visibility of security logos on rainwear worn by 41,000 security personnel in Beijing, Qingdao and Shenyang. Also, 5,500 firefighters will wear 3M reflective material on the back of their work garments. The retroreflective technology bounces light back to the eye, so personnel can be seen at night, dusk and dawn, when light is low.
Noteworthy additions
• 3M’s Post-it® Notes and Scotch® Tape products are in ready supply.
