ALBAWABA- A powerful earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale rocked Tobelo in North Maluku, Indonesia, today at 16:48 WIB. 

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) confirmed that the earthquake, which occurred in the Maluku Sea, approximately 116 km south of Pulau Kaburuang Island, did not pose a tsunami threat.

The 6.6 magnitude earthquake rattled off Halmahera island in North Maluku province reaching a depth of approximately 35 kilometers, according to the USGS.

So far, there have been no reports of damage or injuries in the aftermath of the earthquake. The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has cautioned residents in nearby areas to remain vigilant for potential aftershocks.

Indonesia, situated on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," experiences frequent seismic activity due to its location where tectonic plates converge. This arc of intense seismic activity, stretching from Japan through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific basin, makes the country prone to earthquakes.
