ALBAWABA - The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology recorded an offshore earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.5, which was later raised to 7.1, near Sultan Kudarat province in the southern Philippines on Thursday morning, Xinhua reported.

The earthquake struck at 10:13 a.m. local time, at a depth of 651 kilometers, or 91 kilometers southwest of the seaside town of Kalamansig, according to the institute.

The province of Davao del Norte's Tagum City was also affected by the earthquake. According to the institution, there will be aftershocks from the tectonic earthquake but no structural damage.

The tremor was felt in several provinces in Mindanao, the country's second-largest island, including Davao Occidental, Davao Oriental, Sarangani, Davao de Oro, Davao del Norte, and Cotabato.

The institution stated that the tectonic tremor will create aftershocks but will not cause harm. It noted that the earthquake would not cause a tsunami.

Meanwhile, Indonesia's meteorology, climatology, and geophysics office stated that a 5.8-magnitude earthquake hit off the western province of Bengkulu on Wednesday night but did not cause any substantial waves.
