ALBAWABA - A powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake jolted northern Japan, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported Monday,
Japanese authorities issued a Tsunami warning following the strong quake that struck the country, Japan's Meteorological Agency revealed.
The USGS posted on X saying that a "notable quake" hit 100 km ENE off the coast of Sanriku, Japan.
The earthquake happened at 4:53 p.m. (0753 GMT) in Pacific waters off northern Iwate prefecture.
According to reports, the quake and the tremor were very strong enough to shake large buildings in Tokyo, hundreds of kilometres away from the site of the quake.
Japan's Meteorological Agency said, "Evacuate immediately from coastal regions and riverside areas to a safer place such as high ground or an evacuation building."
"Tsunami waves are expected to hit repeatedly. Do not leave safe ground until the warning is lifted," it added.
In addition, the Japanese broadcaster, NHK, said that on the Japanese seismic scale of 0 to 7, this quake registered an intensity of 5+.
