Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas made a surprise trip to Jordan late on Sunday night, according to sources within the Jordanian government, following his meeting with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry.
The meeting between Abbas and Kerry in Ramallah on Saturday was part of the U.S. bid to restart peace talks between Israel and Palestine.
The American foreign secretary is headed to Israel to speak to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu following his meeting in Palestine.
According to local media reports, Abbas crossed the border shortly after 10pm in a highly unusual move which many suspect is connected to the "historic" treaty signed between Palestine and Jordan last month.
Although the details of the agreement were never fully released, talks between the Jordanian King and the Palestinian prime minister centered on efforts to defend holy Islamic sites in Jerusalem.
