ALBAWABA - In a recent development, the Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT), a unit under the Israeli Ministry of Defense, has announced the commencement of humanitarian aid trucks' passage from Israel to the Gaza Strip through the Kerem Shalom Border Crossing.
This marks the first direct assistance from Israel to Gaza since the outbreak of conflicts between Israel and Palestine on October 7.
As per the agreement with the United States, starting today, UN aid trucks will undergo security checks and be transferred directly from Kerem Shalom to Gaza. This move is expected to increase the daily volume of humanitarian aid reaching Gaza's population.
This marks a significant development as, since the outbreak of conflicts on October 7, the Kerem Shalom Border Crossing sees the first direct entry of humanitarian aid from Israel to Gaza. Previously, aid destined for Gaza was inspected by Israeli authorities at the Nitzana Border Crossing between Israel and Egypt before entering Gaza through the Rafah Border Crossing.
In a recent development, an official spokesperson from the office of the Israeli Prime Minister announced on Sunday the reopening of the Kerem Abu Salem crossing between Israel and the Gaza Strip for aid trucks for the first time since the outbreak of the conflict. However, following this statement, Egyptian security sources and other authorities on Sunday denied the entry of any assistance into the Gaza Strip through the Kerem Abu Salem crossing so far.
The decision to allow direct humanitarian aid entry through the Kerem Shalom Border Crossing underscores efforts to streamline and expedite the delivery of aid to Gaza, addressing the urgent needs of the population amid ongoing tensions in the region.
