America's Andre Agassi defeated unsuspecting fellow American Todd Martin (6-2, 7-6) in the first round match at the Italian Open in Rome, Monday.
This is the first clay tournament Agassi has played since his dramatic French Open last year and found the slow red surface to his liking. Also to the likes of other seeded players including No. 3 seeded Magnus Norman, No. 5 Cedric Pioline, No. 6 Nicholas Lapentti, No. 8 Tim Henman, No. 9 Lleyton Hewitt and No. 14th Younes El Aynaoui.
The only top player missing from the Open is Pete Sampras.
Agassi played just well enough against the slow-moving Martin whose left ankle and knee were heavily taped, rarely having to raise his game.
It was in Rome last year that Agassi began a comeback seeing him win the French Open – (Several Sources).
