A bomb went off outside a mosque in the western Afghan city of Herat on Friday, killing at least eight people, including an exiled Iranian Islamic scholar, a Pakistan-based Afghan news service reported.

The Afghan Islamic Press (AIP) quoted the Herat province governor Mualvi Khairullah Khairkhwa as saying the blast in the west of Herat city also injured some 30 people and sparked anti-Iran protests and violence.

Khairkhwa blamed Iran for the blast and said it was aimed at exiled Sunni sect leader Maulvi Mohammad Musa, who was killed with seven others. Protesters set fire to the Iranian consulate and five worship places of the minority Shiite sect, he said -- ISLAMABAD (Reuters)
