asser Abbas, the eldest son of President Mahmoud Abbas, said Thursday that a Jordanian court in the capital Amman had ruled in his favor in a case against the Qatar-based Al Jazeera satellite channel.
Abbas said Wednesday that he filed a complaint in 2010 against the company, its satellite channel, the presenter of the show the Opposite Direction, Faisal al-Qasim, as well as writer Yasser Zaatira, the producer and the director.
A magistrate criminal court in Amman, according to Abbas, ordered the defendants to pay a fine of 425,000 Jordanian Dinars ($600,535) in addition to lawyer fees and all other expenses.
"This verdict reinstates the good name of our family at moral, political, social and patriotic levels after we have been unwillingly driven in a political issue which we were not involved in by any means.
"We were also baselessly accused of making a deal with the occupying state of Israel in return for obtaining frequencies for Wataniya Mobile Company with which we have no connection."
He added that Al Jazeera "descended over the past few years to the degree of antagonizing and defaming all those who do not support its political trend. The channel has been dedicated to political goals irrelevant to the honest ethics of media."
Abbas highlighted that he chose to take legal procedures against Al Jazeera to give the Palestinian and Arab public opinion an example of how to respond to attacks by media outlets.
In September, a US court in Washington dismissed a libel case by Abbas against US magazine Foreign Policy.
