ALBAWABA - Hamas' Al-Qassam Brigades entered a new Israeli military position in Jabalia Camp, northern Gaza. Though "complex," the operation killed five Israeli troops at close range.

The Brigades said Monday that their members burned an Israeli "Merkava" tank and its crew. Hand grenades were used to attack a military vehicle transporting soldiers, killing many.

Al-Qassam stated that its fighters damaged an armored personnel carrier near Beit Hanoun, northeast of Gaza, with a "Yassin 105" rocket, killing and injuring troops.

One soldier died and a Givati Brigade commander was critically injured in northern Gaza battles on Sunday, according to the Israeli army. This brings the Israeli military dead toll to 41 since the October assault in northern Gaza, according to Al Jazeera.

Israeli forces claimed to have killed "dozens of militants" in Jabalia. The army said the action was predicated on information about armed fighters fleeing. Israeli media said that artillery and direct fire neutralized the fighters.

Islamic Jihad's military branch, the Saraya Al-Quds Brigades, said that during the previous two days, they had launched a number of retaliatory rocket assaults on Israeli cities, including Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. Al Jazeera verified that the attacks, which were in retaliation for what the organization called "Israeli crimes" and the takeover of Al-Aqsa Mosque, also targeted Sderot and other settlements.

Earlier reports from the Home Front Command suggested sirens blowing in Erez near Gaza, while the Israeli military radio said that one missile from Gaza did not strike Israeli land.
