US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright said Tuesday that during the summit at Sharm el-Sheikh, the Israeli and Palestinian sides both expressed a willingness to meet in Washington.

In an interview with CNN television at Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt, Albright was asked if the climate would be right to convince the two sides to resume the main strand of peace negotiations when they meet in Washington in approximately two weeks.

The top US diplomat answered that she and US President Bill Clinton had at the summit found it "interesting ... that despite the anger and what was happening on the ground, there were real indications from both of them that they did see the peace process as the vehicle to end this.

"And they both in fact wanted to come to Washington in order to work out the procedure."

Earlier Tuesday, Jordan's foreign minister Abdel Ilah al-Khatib, also speaking in Sharm el-Sheikh, told AFP that during the two-day summit which concluded there early Tuesday, Clinton had invited the two sides to come the United States in two weeks time - WASHINGTON (AFP)
