Algeria has concluded a deal to buy anti-submarine warfare (ASW) systems from Russia, reported the Middle East Newsline on Sunday.
Russian defense sources were quoted as saying that Algeria had already purchased anti-submarine missiles to bolster the navy of the North African nation.
The missile was identified as the 90R advanced missile system, which can fire up to 12 missiles and strike submarines up to a depth of 1,000 meters, said the sources, quoted by MENL.
The 90R is also meant to destroy torpedoes that threaten surface vessels.
The sources said Algeria planned to buy naval vessels from Moscow.
Russian sources were quoted in earlier reports as saying that any future arms sales to Algiers could be based on Russian investment in Algerian oil and gas projects.
They said such joint ventures could finance huge weapons sales – Albawaba.com
