The Algerian interior ministry opened a free phone line for people to give information about armed Islamic groups in the country, an official from the ministry said on Sunday.

He said it was hoped the move would lead to, "all information being communicated in the fight against terrorism to contribute to the security of people and property."

In the worst recent attack, thirteen people were murdered by suspected Islamic rebels in the working class area of Eucalyptus in Algiers on June 28, bringing to over 730 the number of people killed since the beginning of the year.

The chief of the Algerian army said two days prior to the attack that the number of armed Islamic extremists had dropped from 27,000 in 1992 to 700, AFP reported. (Albawaba.com)
