Five months of drought have brought water levels in Algeria’s 48 reservoirs to record lows, the state agency in charge of dams said on Saturday.

The Agence Nationale des Barrages (ANB) said in a report that water levels in dam reservoirs fell to 38.4 percent of capacity on August 22.

The 1.6 billion cubic meters of water reported were sharply down from the 45.9 percent of capacity registered in June, said the report, cited by the official Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

Two dams in Medea province, south of Algiers, were completely empty and water levels in the Keddara reservoir supplying the capital dipped to 17 percent of capacity, said ANB.

Water shortages in the past four years have forced the government to limit supplies to every other day in main cities, it added – Albawaba.com
