A group of Algerian intellectuals and journalists who returned to Algiers Monday from a controversial trip to Israel were confronted by Islamic demonstrators shouting "traitors," an AFP correspondent reported.
About a dozen Algerians went to Israel on June 25th for a week-long visit, which triggered a wave of protests in the Muslim world, but won some support from independent journalists in Algeria.
Many critics had branded the visit a "clear violation" of Arab countries' resolutions outlawing normalization with Israel.
Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika called the visit a "betrayal of the Lebanese" and a "stab in the back for the Syrians." - ALGIERS (AFP)
