An American soldier was killed on Saturday during a firefight involving al Qaeda and Taliban forces in the eastern part of Afghanistan.

The US soldier was identified as Sgt. Steven Checo, aged 22, a member of the 504th Infantry, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

"Sgt. Checo's death is a reminder to us of the sacrifices being made every day by the dedicated men and women of our armed forces," CNN quoted Assistant Secretary of Defense Victoria Clarke as saying.

"His death, as well as his dedicated service, strengthens our resolve in pursuit of terrorists, terrorist networks and those who harbor and support them," she added.

The gun battle occurred before dawn in Paktika province, when a squad of around a dozen US soldiers came under fire from a small guerrilla unit, which included no more than seven men, US Army spokesman Major Steve Clutter said. (Albawaba.com)
