Attackers opened fire on a U.S. convoy in northeast Baghdad, killing one American soldier and wounding four others, the U.S. military said Saturday.

The attack occurred just after 11 p.m. Friday night in the Thawra neighborhood, military spokesman Sgt. Patrick Compton said.

Another U.S. soldier was killed in an ambush near the southern town of Najaf, the U.S. military said Friday.

The soldier was killed while investigating a car theft Thursday in Najaf, 160 kilometers southwest of Baghdad, a statement from U.S. Central Command said. The soldier died before a medical evacuation team arrived, Centcom said, according to AP.

Also Friday, Sgt. Patrick Compton, a U.S. military spokesman in Baghdad, said three suspects arrested in connection with the disappearance of two American soldiers were being interrogated.

In another incident, northwest of Baghdad, a U.S. Army truck struck an explosive device on a dirt road. A U.S. soldier and an eyewitness said wounded Americans were evacuated by helicopter.

The U.S. soldier said the Americans were driving to Baghdad to make telephone calls to their families when the explosion happened. (Albawaba.com)
