Amnesty International condemned on Friday a deadly bomb attack in Jerusalem but also pointed the finger at wider attacks against civilians in the five-week-old wave of Middle East violence.
The London-based rights group said in a statement that it "condemns yesterday's killings of two civilians in a bomb attack near Jerusalem's Mahane Yehuda open-air market."
"Attacks deliberately targeting civilians can never be justified under any circumstances ... we call on Islamic Jihad and other armed groups, Palestinians or Jewish, to stop such killings immediately," the statement said.
But Amnesty also noted that since September 29, "more than 150 Palestinians have been killed and at least 4,000 have been wounded by Israeli security forces using firearms to suppress demonstrations and violent riots."
"In addition, Palestinians have been killed and ill-treated by Israeli settlers, and Israelis have been killed and ill-treated by Palestinians," it said.
"Only a new mindset, by governments, opposition groups and individuals, which recognizes that the right to life and physical integrity are basic and fundamental rights, can bring an end to this violence," Amnesty said – LONDON (AFP)
