Several people were hurt when hundreds of young immigrants clashed with police in Copenhagen Wednesday following a protest march against Israel, a police spokesman said.

The spokesman, Flemming Steen Munch, told AFP that one child was hurt after being hit by a stone thrown by one of the demonstrators who was protesting actions in recent days by the Israeli army in Gaza and the West Bank.

Around 5,000 people, many of them of Palestinian origin, were present at the demonstration, which was conducted under close police surveillance from the City Hall to the Danish parliament.

Some of the marchers burned Israeli flags while others carried Palestinian flags and placards bearing slogans such as "Jihad is the only way to liberate our country," "They are killing our children" and "Israel assassin".

"The situation was difficult to control because 2,000 very excited people refused to listen to appeals for calm from the organizers," the spokesman said.

Police stepped up security around the Israeli embassy, the main Copenhagen synagogue and other Israeli interests in Denmark, Munch added -- COPENHAGEN (AFP)
