Several Arab airlines have called on Beirut’s Airport to increase the number of flights to Lebanon in response to increased passenger demand, the Director General of Lebanese Civil Aviation said Sunday.

“Since the start of 2015 until now, all indicators are very positive and the proof of that is several airlines have called for an increased number of flights to Beirut,” Director General of Lebanese Civil Aviation, Daniel el-Haiby said from Beirut’s Airport Sunday.

Emirates Airlines is one of several companies that made a request for increased flights, he said, while predicting that the number of passengers flying in and out of Beirut’s airport would reach seven million by the end of the year.

El-Haiby believes the request for additional flights is a positive indicator for an active aviation season and cited the number of flight bookings to Lebanon for the upcoming Easter holidays as proof of increased passenger demand.

El-Haiby also expressed his hope that the security situation in Lebanon would support the surge in people flocking to the country.

In 2014, Beirut’s airport handled almost six million passengers.

With an even higher number of passengers expected to fly in and out of the airport by the end of the 2015, El-Haiby reiterated his call on the government to expand the facility so it could meet the increasing demand.
