Police told the Associated Press that approximately 2,500 protestors gathered outside the Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu residence in Jerusalem to protest the fund cuts for Christian schools.
Christian school administrators accuse Israel of cutting funds to pressure them to assimilate into the Israeli public school system, a move they say would interfere with the schools’ Christian values and high academic performance.
According to the AP 33,000 students from 47 schools have been on strike since the start of the school year on September 1st. Arab law makers joined the students, parents and principals at Sunday’s protest.
Protestors claim to be the victims of unfair discrimination since Israel continues to fund large private school networks that cater to ultra-Orthodox Jews, while slashing the Christian private schools’ budget, in addition to placing tuition caps.
